Last week, Jan 28 is, the day. It is a day commemorating something that most of us were unaware of 15 years ago.

Today, almost every day, we deal with someone through the apps on our laptops, mobile phones, etc. We share and exchange our data, sometimes private, which seems normal. Our dependence on ICT to support our lives is pervasive, and life wouldn’t happen nicely without it.

As part of our commitment to serving our business and corporation clients, we research and deliver solutions based on and part of the Open Source software. Therefore, we understand well what we should have 15 years ago. Privacy data harvesting is the most significant factor in a more enormous criminal act, collecting and selling the data to the one who can make more money from the data: Carding, Proxy trading, money laundering, etc.

Equnix is part of the International Association of Privacy Protection to show our significant commitment to the world and our concern in combating the misuse of privacy data. We understand that having an encryption function in the system is insufficient since the most used data repository in business is RDBMS. Therefore, we researched Postgres and developed the seamless encryption feature in our product, 11DBX.

This feature does not require complex mechanisms to secure confidential data. Applications use it seamlessly and don’t need to bother managing the encryption key, increasing the data security by the end.

11DBX uses state-of-the-art column encryption with patented index search; it is swift to search and does not require much computing effort. Therefore, it is primarily the fastest RDBMS encryption in its class, surpassing competitors.

Type of Data Encryption Elaboration

Three types of data encryption models are usually implemented in RDBMS or data storage: Tablespace, Table’s column, and Storage basis.

Tablespace is the slowest since it encrypts virtually everything: the data, index, attributes, etc. Compared to the column basis, it only encrypts the appropriate column as defined and decrypts the column result. This tablespace encryption could be considered transparent, as Or*cle claims their TDE (Transparent Data Encryption). The benefit of this type of encryption is there’s no special treatment on application side to use it. The downside is it is slow down the system up to 40% based on the test.

While column based encryption will only decryp data when the result fetched, of course encrypt is done on every INSERT. This is made possible if the encryption system has special indexing just like 11DBX done. With our indexing mechanism, the scanning only in the index, not the table. Therefore there is no revealing decrypted data in the memory (Data In-Use safe). After the result is fetched, data is decrypted right before delivery.

11DB has two types of Data with its own Indexing, for different purposes: (a) ESEC, Equnix Seamless Encryption Character. For character based data, has limited length on purpose, avoiding TOAST which is very bad for the performance. (b) ESEN, Equnix Seamless Encryption Numeric, its intent for encrypt any number: Integers, UUID, Money, etc. It has very special function for increasing and decreasing data without revealing the content to the user, and our innovation indexing method.
